ABEOKUTA – Alhaji Ismail Adebayo Yisa, widely known as OMO-ADE and a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abeokuta North Local Government, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's recent decision to establish state police as a crucial step toward addressing the security challenges currently facing Nigeria.
During a recent visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja by a delegation of notable Katsina indigenes, led by Governor Dikko Radda, President Tinubu reaffirmed the necessity of creating state police as part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen national security. His remarks come in the wake of escalating insecurity issues plaguing various regions in the country, particularly in the northern states.
"The introduction of state police is not just an option; it is an imperative," said OMO-ADE. He expressed optimism that localized policing will empower states to address specific security concerns more effectively and bolster the safety of their citizens. This sentiment reflects a growing consensus among various stakeholders, advocating for a more robust, decentralized approach to law enforcement that can respond swiftly to the dynamic security landscape.
President Tinubu underscored the urgency of the situation during his address, emphasizing the federal government’s commitment to confronting insecurity with decisive action. "The security challenges that we are facing are surmountable," he asserted, acknowledging the inherited vulnerabilities that have left the nation exposed. He pointed out the need for a reassessment of operational strategies by security agencies, particularly in Katsina State, which has seen a surge in banditry.
To combat these rising threats, Tinubu revealed plans to deploy advanced military equipment and surveillance technology while enhancing the capacities of newly recruited forest guards in the state. His administration has approved additional acquisitions of drones aimed at improving situational awareness and operational effectiveness in the fight against crime.
"We will defeat insecurity. We must protect our children, our people, our livelihood, our places of worship, and our recreational spaces. They cannot intimidate us," he proclaimed, reinforcing his commitment to securing the nation.
<<<The President also highlighted the establishment of a committee in February 2024, tasked with studying the framework for state policing, emphasizing the administration’s serious commitment to finding a viable solution. While the initiative has garnered considerable support, he noted that as of March, 20 states had yet to submit their reports, stressing the need for timely participation from all states to ensure the success of the proposed law enforcement reform.
Alhaji OMO-ADE's commendation of President Tinubu's proactive measures reflects the broader aspirations of the APC and its dedication to tackling the pressing issue of insecurity head-on. He believes that empowering state-level law enforcement will not only enhance public safety but also restore the faith of Nigerians in their government’s ability to protect them.
As Nigeria grapples with multifaceted security dilemmas, the dialogue surrounding the establishment of state police remains pivotal. The efficacy of such measures will largely depend on the collaboration between federal and state governments, as well as the engagement of local communities in the broader effort to reclaim safety and security across the nation.
In conclusion, the recent statements by President Tinubu and the backing from leaders like Alhaji OMO-ADE signal a significant shift towards a more community-oriented approach to policing in Nigeria, with the potential to transform the landscape of national security for the better.
