eshape Nigeria's educational landscape, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been praised by APC Chieftain Alhaji Ismail Adebayo Yisa, popularly known as OMO-ADE, for his significant strides in reforming the nation’s educational framework. This commendation comes amid the unveiling of an ambitious curriculum revamp aimed at equipping the country’s youth with practical skills essential for self-reliance and future employment.

On September 12, 2025, OMO-ADE expressed his optimism regarding the new educational strategies, highlighting that the emphasis on skills acquisition would ensure that students leave secondary school not just with theoretical knowledge but with hands-on experience that will foster independence and entrepreneurial spirit.

Driving Skills, Shaping Futures: A New Era for Technical Education

Under the leadership of Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa'id Ahmad, the Federal Government has announced a game-changing curriculum overhaul for technical education. This reform aims to streamline educational offerings by focusing on essential trade competencies that align with the dynamic needs of Nigeria’s economy and global job market.

Starting from the 2025/2026 academic year, all Federal Science and Technical Colleges (FSTCs) will officially transition to Federal Technical Colleges, each offering between six to ten carefully selected trade courses. Students can expect a curriculum that includes a mix of core subjects such as Mathematics, English, and Science, along with specialized trade courses designed to prepare them effectively for the workforce.

A total of 26 trade areas have been modernized to reflect industry demands, introducing practical fields such as Solar PV Installation and Maintenance, Fashion Design, Computer Hardware Repairs, Livestock Farming, and more. This broad spectrum of options ensures that students gain relevant skills valuable in today’s ever-evolving job market.

Cultivating Competence and National Identity

In addition to technical training, the new curriculum emphasizes Citizenship and Heritage Studies, integrating vital components of Nigerian history and civic education. This holistic approach aims to instill a sense of national pride and responsibility, empowering students to become not only skilled professionals but also conscientious citizens ready to contribute positively to the society.

Dr. Alausa reaffirmed the alignment of these educational reforms with President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which envisions propelling Nigeria’s economy towards a trillion dollars by 2030. He stated that this initiative not only positions students competitively on a global scale but also plays a crucial role in driving national development through a skilled workforce.

A Commitment to a Smooth Transition

To facilitate this transition, the Ministry of Education has pledged full support to schools, parents, and students, ensuring a seamless implementation of the new curriculum. Comprehensive resources, including a detailed list of subjects and trade areas, will be provided to guide stakeholders through this transformative journey.

As Nigeria embraces this monumental shift in its educational system, leaders like OMO-ADE foresee a future where the youth are not just recipients of education but empowered individuals ready to shape their destinies and contribute to the nation’s progress. With these reforms taking root, the hope for a self-sustaining, skilled youth populace becomes a tangible reality on the horizon.
