Police arrest two for arms trafficking in Jigawa

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested two suspected arms traffickers and recovered two locally fabricated firearms.

This was disclosed in a statement issued to journalists on Sunday in Dutse, the state capital, by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Lawan Shi’isu.

According to the statement, operatives attached to the Kazaure Divisional Police Headquarters acted on credible intelligence to apprehend one Abdussamad Haruna, a 30-year-old resident of Dansure village, near Gwiwa in Kazaure town.

He added that a thorough search led to the recovery of one locally made revolver rifle, which had been concealed inside a sack.

“The police are currently investigating the suspect’s links to criminal gangs operating within and beyond Jigawa State,” he said.

In a related development, Shi’isu further disclosed that in a follow-up operation, another suspect, Auwalu Yusuf, aged 24, from Kofar Wambai in Kano State, was arrested on July 20, 2025 with a second firearm recovered in his possession.

“The police believe that an individual from Sabon Layi in Barikin Ladi, Plateau State, is involved in the illegal trade and distribution of arms.

“The suspects are currently in police custody and undergoing discreet investigation.

“The police are working to apprehend other members of the syndicate and trace the source and intended recipients of the recovered weapons,” the statement added.

The state Commissioner of Police, Dahiru Muhammad, commended the officers involved for their vigilance and professionalism in disrupting the arms trafficking network.

He reaffirmed the command’s dedication to safeguarding peace and security across the state.

The police further appealed to members of the public to continue sharing credible information to support ongoing efforts to tackle crime, assuring them that the command remains committed to protecting lives and property in Jigawa.

They also pledged to intensify operations aimed at curbing the spread of crime in the state.
