......As Government Issues Urgent Alert for Riverbank and Wetland Communities Amid Heavy Rainfall Concerns

The Chieftain of All Progressives Congress APC, Alhaji Yisa Ismaila Adebayo popularly known as OMO-ADE has urged the people of Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun and it's environment to comply with the Ministry of Environment flood alert by evacuating the area to avoid any casualties during this rain season.

Yesterday, The Ogun State Government has issued a critical flood alert urging residents of vulnerable communities to relocate as the overflow of the Ogun River is expected in the coming weeks. The warning, communicated by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, highlights the potential risks associated with heavy rainfall and the controlled release of water from the Oyan Dam.

In a press briefing held in Abeokuta on Monday, Oresanya emphasized the urgency of the situation, offering guidance for residents living in riverbank and wetland areas. The alert covers a wide range of locations that are predicted to be affected, including Akute, Alagbole, Isheri, Magboro, Makogi, Orimerunmu, Iro, and Kajola. Significant parts of Abeokuta, particularly Lafenwa, Enugada, Adedotun, Iberekodo, Akin-Olugbade, and Ago-Odo, are also under imminent threat of flooding.

“As we approach the estimated period of flood risk from October 20 to November 3, it is vital for residents to take this warning seriously and prepare for possible evacuation,” said Oresanya. He underscored that the government is committed to mitigating the impacts of flooding through regular alerts and preparedness strategies.

The anticipated overflow is attributed to heavy rainfall in the northern regions of the country, which is expected to contribute to rising water levels in the Ogun River. The controlled release of water from the Oyan Dam is a necessary precaution to manage the dam's capacity but poses an added risk to areas downstream.

The Ogun State Government is coordinating with local authorities and emergency services to ensure the safety of residents. Communities are advised to stay informed through news updates and to take necessary precautions, including moving to safer grounds if they reside in the indicated areas.

Authorities are also recommending that residents secure their properties and have emergency plans in place, in case evacuation becomes imperative. Welfare centers are being prepared for those who may need assistance, with provisions for food, shelter, and medical care.

As the weather patterns evolve, the Ogun State Government continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to prioritize their safety and heed all warnings from authorities during this potentially hazardous period.

For further information and updates, individuals can contact the Ogun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA) and stay tuned to local news outlets.
